Krakow's Old Town

History

One of the Polish jewels in the crown is the Old Town in Krakow, entered on the UNESCO list in 1978 as one of the first 12 objects in the world. The inscribed area includes the Old Town within the former walls, the Wawel Hill and the Kazimierz and Stradom districts.

The Old Town is the oldest area of the Royal Capital City of Krakow. Its center is the Main Market Square, and the second important point is the rock on the Vistula river called the Wawel Hill. The main monuments of Krakow's Old Town are located on the Market Square: St. Mary's Church, Cloth Hall and the Town Hall Tower. The Old Town is surrounded by a green belt called Planty, which was created in the place of the former moat.

Monument of the culture of the Polish nation, a tiny piece of modern Krakow, where the greatest works of culture and art from a thousand years of history of this place are gathered. In Krakow's Old Town, we have 331 historic tenement houses and 2 million movable works of art. Krakow is primarily Wawel - the former seat of Polish kings. UNESCO also appreciated the Jagiellonian University from 1364, founded by King Casimir the Great as the second in Europe, and the most famous Gothic cathedral in Poland, i.e. St. Mary's Church with the altar of Wit Stwosz and the graves of Polish rulers. Krakow is also the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow with the most modern branch in Europe in the underground market, Sukiennice, Błonia, Floriańska Street with Jan Matejko's house, Barbican and artists, Planty and Kościuszko Mound, as well as the world-famous Krakow florists and the tastiest obarzanki.
