Mariacki Square

History place

Do you know that while walking around Krakow's squares, you often tread around... cemeteries ?! It is no different in this case!

The square adjacent to St. Mary's Church was from the Middle Ages to the last years of the 18th century the place of burials for many generations of Cracovians. Look down: the reach of the necropolis is marked by a white limestone ankle under your feet. The Austrians, who ruled Krakow at that time, ordered the liquidation of church cemeteries, including the one located at the main temple of the city. They did so for hygienic reasons - to keep the burials away from human settlements. In 1803, they opened the first municipal cemetery, today the Rakowicki Cemetery.
