We will see souvenirs related to the Polish Pope John Paul II, and in the collection of sacred art works we will find the oldest Polish painting.
Tradition says that in the place of today's tenement house no. 19, St. Stanisław, bishop of Kraków and martyr from the 11th century, one of the most important patrons of Poland, whose relics are venerated in the Wawel cathedral and in the church on Skałka. The museum is currently named after Cardinal Karol Wojtyła - the future Pope John Paul II in the years 1953-1958 occupied a tiny room, now open to the public, on the first floor of the House of St. Stanislaus. After receiving the bishop's ordination, he moved to the neighboring Dziekańska tenement house at number 21, where he lived until the end of 1967. Today you can see memorabilia related to the Polish Pope from various periods of his priesthood and pontificate, from the first skis that he served in the 1950s, to the service on which he was served breakfast when he visited the museum as a pope during one of his pilgrimages to Poland . The museum has a permanent exhibition of sacred art from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, including sculptures, paintings, vessels and vestments. We will see here, among others the oldest Polish painting - Saints from Dębno from the 13th century. The museum also hosts contemporary art exhibitions.
