St. Adalbert’s Church

Temple

What is this small, inconspicuous church doing on the magnificent, beautiful Krakow Main Market Square? And standing sideways?

This is a memento from very old times, long before the city was founded and the Market Square was marked out. The place - at the fork of trade routes - was chosen not by accident: according to tradition, in the 10th century, St. Wojciech, a Czech clergyman who came to Polish lands at the invitation of prince Bolesław the Brave.

Although in the 17th century the church was rebuilt and furnished in the spirit of the Baroque, its main form dates back to the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The original Romanesque elements of the church are the oldest monument within the Main Square. A fragment of a wall made of small limestone cubes and a stepped portal (from Grodzka Street) are now exposed almost 2 meters below the level of modern cobblestones. Imagine this was once the market level!
