Church of the Dominican Order

Temple

Destroyed many times by fires, it still hides real treasures of architecture and art, traces of the splendor of mighty Krakow families and merchant guilds as well as important objects of worship.

The Romanesque parish church of St. Trinity. When the Dominicans came to the city in 1222, the temple was handed over to them, and the parish was transferred to St. Mary's Church. After the destruction by the Tatars, in the mid-thirteenth century, the construction of a new gothic church began, which lasted several dozen years. In 1462 a great fire broke out here, according to legend, caused by the Dominicans themselves, who dealt with alchemy and secret sciences, incl. fabrication of gold. In the following centuries, chapels erected by Kraków guilds or intended for the founder's families were added to the nave and chancel. The pride of the church is the Renaissance chapel of St. Jacek, modeled on the Sigismund Chapel in Wawel. The figure of this saint, who started the activity of the Dominicans in Krakow, is associated with numerous legends and legends, for example that the monk was able to give healing power or drive Satan out of the bodies of the possessed. Devilish moans and whine of devils driven out of human bodies are said to be heard even today near the church.

The tragic fire, which in 1850 destroyed a large part of the city, also affected the Dominican church. After the reconstruction, it gained, among others a stylized porch with an original gothic entrance portal decorated with plant ornaments. Inside, there are, among others, a bronze late-gothic tombstone of the humanist Filip Kallimach (teacher of the sons of King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk) designed by the creator of the Marian altar, Wit Stwosz. and epitaph plaques from the cemetery that used to be located next to the church. Apparently there is a well in the monastery where souls suffering in purgatory appear asking for prayer.
