Little Market Square

History place

This charming corner in the Middle Ages was filled with the smell of meat and fish, and later also ... printing ink!

Since the Middle Ages, Mały Rynek was an auxiliary square for the Main Square. Goods were sold here that did not look and smell very good - meat and fish. Trade (later also in old goods, fruit and other goods) disappeared from here with the advent of civilization - at the beginning of the 20th century, a tram line leading to the Main Square was built across the center of the square.

Among the houses at the Small Market Square, the most remarkable is the tenement house Szoberowska (No. 6) with a late Gothic facade. The oldest Polish newspaper, Merkuriusz Polski, was printed here in 1661. The mischievous add that, although it was released for just over half a year, and its publishers soon moved to Warsaw, no one dares to doubt that Krakow is the cradle of Polish media!
