The most famous Polish painter of the 19th century was born and lived here, whose paintings have been known to every Pole for several generations.
The most famous Polish historical painter of the 19th century, the author of monumental canvases relating to the most important events in the history of Poland. The paintings of Jan Matejko (1838-1883) have been known to every Pole for several generations. In the Matejko House, care was taken to faithfully recreate the interior of the rooms from the artist's time, and numerous private souvenirs were collected: original living room and bedroom furnishings, personal items, knick-knacks, family photos. There is also a picture gallery showing, among others, sketches for large canvases such as Mikołaj Kopernik or Jan Sobieski near Vienna, presented in larger galleries in Poland. In the master's former studio, you can watch a film devoted to his work. In the museum, we can also find testimonies of Matejko's collector's passions. The artist collected examples of artistic craftsmanship and military items from Poland and Europe, as well as the Middle and Far East, which served him as props in his paintings. His collections included not only fabrics, clothes, armor and weapons from various historical periods, but also ancient instruments of torture.
