Nowa Huta - in the footsteps of authenticity

Sightseeing

Nowa Huta was an industrial district of Krakow and the pride of the socialist realist period in Poland. Construction began in 1949 in the village of Mogiła, and the first block of flats was erected here (Osiedle Wandy 14). In the years 1953–1956, socialist realist buildings were built and most of the buildings were erected then. The metallurgical plant covering a huge area was built in the years 1949-1954.

Today, the oldest part of Nowa Huta is under conservation protection (Plac Centralny and the surrounding housing estates, as well as the administrative center of the former Tadeusz Sendzimir Steelworks and meadows). Nowa Huta is not only socialist realist architecture, but also a Cistercian monastery in Mogiła, a historic wooden church of Saint Bartholomew in Mogiła from the 15th century, Jan Matejko's manor house, defensive fortifications and the Wanda Mound, erected around the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries, which, according to legend, is Wanda's grave , the daughter of Prince Krak, the founder of Krakow.

The famous district of Krakow, built in the spirit of socialist realism, once avoided by tourists, today is a place teeming with life, mainly thanks to local residents. It is a very attractive district with many interesting places to visit. The heart of Nowa Huta, this unique urban layout in Krakow, is Ronald Reagan's Central Square, built in the shape of a pentagon. This is a central place - a green area intended for walkers and the main transport hub.
