Central Square

History place

To this day, it is the main and the best recognized point of Nowa Huta. Every tourist route that we mark out in this district leads through it. The square and the surrounding buildings form a unified whole.

The Central Square, built in the mid-1950s, is a classic example of socialist realism. To this day, it is the main and the best recognized point of this district of Krakow. The square, which has been named after Ronald Reagan since 2004, is surrounded by housing estates which have been given simple names: A, B, C and D. They refer architecturally - like all Polish socialist realist assumptions - mainly to the Renaissance. The buildings form a uniform, well-composed whole, although the design of Tadeusz Ptaszycki, the main architect of Nowa Huta, has never been fully implemented. In the original plans, the square was to be closed from the south with the theater building, and from the north - with the Nowa Huta town hall.

The few preserved interiors of commercial premises are of great interest. The former atmosphere of Nowa Huta can also be found in the interiors of the Cepelix store (formerly Cepelia - Centrum B1 estate). The interior of the room has survived from that period to this day, incl. stylized wooden furniture and decorative plafonds.

The "Stylowa" restaurant (Centrum C 3 estate), which has been operating continuously since 1956, is advertised as a place that takes its guests to the times of "the glory of Polish socialism". It was here that half a century ago, waitresses persuaded steelworkers that drinking coffee is extremely elegant. Here you would come across a "liliput" (small coffee) or the best tartare in Krakow, and consumption was accompanied by melodies played on the piano by the blind Mr. Zbyszek. Plastic ivy cascading down the walls, starched tablecloths, suspended ceiling with halogen lamps ... Peerel chic as you look.
