It is one of the oldest still visible evidence of human presence in this area. The 14-meter-high Wanda Mound stands near the wall surrounding the metallurgical plant, on the highest hill in this area. The mound was probably built around the 7th-8th centuries and, according to legend, it is supposed to be Wanda's tomb.
Who was Wanda and why was the mound built for her? Legends say that she was the daughter of the founder of Krakow, Prince Krak. Having rejected the hand of the German ruler, she threw herself into the waves of the Vistula, not wanting to expose her subjects to the revenge of the disappointed suitor. The tombstone mound was built in the place where her body was fished out of the river.
Other reasons for the mound's creation include defensive, ceremonial and astronomical reasons. In the latter case, the Wanda Mound with Krak's Mound would form an element of the Celtic calendar system.
Since 1890, the mound has been crowned with a marble sculpture of an eagle designed by Jan Matejko.
