Krakow's Kazimierz

History

Cracow's Kazimierz was founded by King Casimir the Great in the 14th century. For many centuries it was a separate royal city, important for the history of Poland. In the 20th century, it was slightly neglected, but then it blossomed again and again attracts crowds of people with its extraordinary beauty and unique atmosphere.

Cracow's Kazimierz is a special place, shaped by the centuries-old Christian-Jewish neighborhood. Jews appeared in Kazimierz in the mid-14th century and until the beginning of the 19th century they lived in the area of the "Jewish town", enclosed within today's Miodowa, św. Wawrzyniec, Wąska, Józefa and Boże Ciała streets. It was an autonomous enclave - Jews ruled in it alone - they had only the king over them, in whose name the governor of Krakow exercised power.

Today, Kazimierz is one of the most recognizable places in Krakow.This district, vibrant with cultural and artistic life, attracts especially those who want to spirit of Krakow's bohemia.The most crowded cafes and well-known art studios and galleries are concentrated in the area of Szeroka, Izaaka, Miodowa, Józefa, Podbrzezie streets and around Plac Nowy. However, it is difficult to draw up a complete list of pubs, cafes and restaurants that are of these places has a unique character and decor, and there are dozens of them in Krakow's Kazimierz.
