Kupa Synagogue

Temple

The synagogue was added from the north to the defensive walls (partially preserved, visible from the courtyard at Warszauera Street), it has a simple shape and simple furnishings.

Because it was connected to a poorhouse, it was also called the Poor Synagogue. The synagogue was established in the 1640s, mainly thanks to contributions to the Jewish kehilla (kehilla), hence the Hebrew name Kupa, i.e. the kehilla's contribution (kehilla).

The current appearance of the synagogue is the result of the reconstruction carried out in the 19th century, when, among others the barrel vault was replaced with a flat wooden ceiling with a gallery for women underneath it. Later transformations deprived the building of its baroque style features, and the devastation carried out by the Nazis irretrievably destroyed its liturgical character. Only a stone altar - the Aron Kodesh - covered with pilasters, has been preserved from the time of construction.

At the end of the 20th century, e.g. an impressive ceiling polychrome with views of the cities of the Holy Land and paintings with the signs of the zodiac decorating the gallery's balustrade.
