Salwatorski Cemetery

History place

Necropolis located in Krakow, west of Salwator, in the Zwierzyniec district. Consecrated in 1856, the small cemetery initially served the inhabitants of the surrounding area. In 1888, thanks to the efforts of the abbess of the local Norbertine nuns, Euphemia Żarska, a neo-Gothic chapel of St. Joseph. Many prominent Poles are buried at the cemetery, incl. theater actor Juliusz Osterwa, poet and satirist Jan Sztaudynger, painter Andrzej Wróblewski, aviator Janusz Meissner, mathematical physicist Roman Stanisław Ingarden, science fiction writer Stanisław Lem. In 2016, Andrzej Wajda - theater and film director, Oscar winner, great friend and resident of Krakow - was said goodbye at the Salwator Cemetery.

Due to its location - at the foot of the Sikornik hill (near Kościuszko Mound) - the cemetery is a place eagerly visited by Cracovians and tourists. It offers a beautiful panorama of the city, and in good weather also to the Beskids and the peaks of the Tatra Mountains.
