Museum

The biographical museum of the greatest artist of Polish modernism is located in the building of the former granary at Sikorski Square. Situated in the vicinity of Planty, the church of oo. Franciszkanów, Wawel and Wisła, fits into the space of the city where and for which Stanisław Wyspiański created.

Wyspiański's work, extremely versatile, includes various fields of art that complement each other. The artist's painting output includes stained glass compositions, portraits and landscapes, in the field of applied art he designed furniture and interior décor, and also dealt with typography and editing. He is the author of many literary works - plays, tragedies, rhapsodies and poems. He was also a director and set designer of his own and other authors' plays on theater stages.

The National Museum in Krakow has the world's largest and most valuable collection of works by this genius artist. It includes Wyspiański's paintings, sketches, designs and artistic craftsmanship made according to his original designs. This magnificent collection, numbering over 1,100 objects, is completed by personal mementoes, the artist's private book collection and archives - manuscripts and photographs.

The artist's legacy was mostly donated or purchased for the collection shortly after his death in November 1907, The National Museum was a natural place to collect the works of the author of The Wedding, and the management at that time, with the support of people from the literary and artistic world, was already planning to create a branch named after Stanisław Wyspiański. The idea of establishing a branch or an exhibition of Wyspiański's works in the permanent galleries of the National Museum was repeated in the 1930s, among others. In the new building planned at that time at Aleja Mickiewicza, a stained-glass cardboard box was to be displayed in the Pantheon of Stanisław Wyspiański. After 1945, there were also projects to establish a biographical museum in the artist's apartments: in the Długosz House at 25 Kanonicza Street or in a tenement house at 157 Krowoderska Street. Ultimately, the branch was established in 1983 in a building at 9 Kanonicza Street. In 2004, it was moved to the Szołayski House.

The present Stanisław Wyspiański Museum is located in a building erected in the 18th century outside the city walls. From the beginning of its existence, it performed various functions, including a granary, factory, shop and the seat of the Association of Architects of the Republic of Poland. After 1945, it was taken over by the National Museum, becoming a repository of works of art for many years, and in 2013–2021, the EUROPEUM Center for European Culture.
