Dragon's Den

The cave, where the dragon lived according to legend, leads from the Wawel Hill to the Vistula River. The legendary monster terrorized the local inhabitants and demanded that cattle be sacrificed to him, and in other versions of the story - virgins.
The strongest warriors could not cope with the Wawel dragon. It was only the clever shoemaker Skuba who defeated him, taking advantage of his greatest weakness - gluttony. He put a ram stuffed with sulfur in its cave, which the reptile swallowed with relish. Soon the monster began to feel a nagging thirst - it was the sulfur that burned its insides. He rolled out of the pit on the Vistula River and began to drink water, but could not quench his thirst. The dragon did not give up, he drank constantly, without hesitation, and finally - burst!
The sculpture of the Wawel dragon is located at the exit of the cave on the Vistula boulevard. Several hundred years ago, there was a famous inn in the cave, where - not always taking into account the warning resulting from the fate of the monster - the inhabitants of Krakow and numerous travelers quenched their thirst. The entrance for visitors is now located on a hill, behind the Thieves' Tower. The route leading to the river, with a total length of 81 m, leads through corridors and chambers with fossils and karst carvings varied.
