Museum of E. Hutten-Czapski

Museum

Here, the history is recorded in numismatics, old maps and prints, and the Polish artist's biography is interwoven with the most important events of 20th-century Europe.

The 19th-century Czapski Palace houses an exhibition, research and research center devoted to numismatics. educational. The permanent exhibition features over 2,500 valuable coins, medals and banknotes, and is complemented by temporary presentations of old prints and old maps. The history of the museum is connected with the figure of a collector, Count. Emeryk Hutten-Czapski (1828-1896) - a bibliophile, collector of prints, works of art and Polish memorabilia, but above all the creator of the most valuable collection of Polish numismatics in the history. After his death, a private museum was opened in the pavilion added to the palace, which was then handed over to the National Museum by the family's decision. The palace is surrounded by a beautiful garden - already in the 21st century a modern Józef Czapski Pavilion was built here, devoted to the collector's grandson, an outstanding intellectual, writer, painter and art critic associated with the Parisian "Kultura". The permanent multimedia exhibition presented here, although small, is not only the story of an individual's life, but also a testimony to the dramatic history of Europe in the 20th century.
